Hi everyone,
I know I previously mentioned 2 themes for Naomi's upcoming 3rd birthday : a MLP (My Little Pony) party or a Magdagascar party. However, the little one suddenly had a brilliant idea and exclaimed that she wanted a Bubble Guppies Birthday cake. And she has been role-playing as Gil the guppy with her new found obsession of the cartoon Bubble Guppies. For about 2-3 weeks now, she wants to be a boy, just like Gil the Bubble Guppy.
Hence, yes, I am changing the theme to a Bubble Guppies birthday. After all, it was the first time she had specifically asked for a certain theme for her birthday, and I was surprised by her eloquence in her request. To quote the little Gil-wannabe at home,
"...but Mama, I want a Bubble Guppies Birthday Cake pleeeasse. It's VERY, very nice.. and I am Gil the boy mermaid. I like Bubble Guppies. I NEED a Bubble Guppies Birthday Cake!"
When a toddler who is a little shy of 3 years old, looks at you with puppy eyes and asks so sincerely that she not only wants but needs it... It is really hard to refuse. Of course, we know she doesn't NEED it. But, why not? After all, we haven't ordered her cake, no preparations were bought or made yet. Thankfully, we are only going to do a birthday celebration in school this year. So less preparations needed than the last 2 years!
For those of you who have not the slightest inkling what 'Bubble Guppies' is, let me have the honour of introducing my daughter's favourite cartoon show of the moment (besides plenty of others, of course):

It's the BUBBLE GUPPIES!
Aren't they cute? Naomi has been watching Bubble Guppies for a looong time now. This show is broadcasted on cable, the Nickelodeon Nick Jr channel. While I know there are some parents who dislike their children watching cartoons, but I find that the Nick Jr and Disney Jr channels are great for kids as they have lots of great educational cartoons, and not some nonsense, just-for-laughter type cartoons. Bubble Guppies is one of the many educational cartoons that engages children with its colourful 3D cartoon characters and intelligent yet easy-to-understand content. If you do not have cable, head over to the Bubble Guppies page on Nickelodeon's site where you can watch their full length videos and more! Or rather, let your kids watch :P I love that they have great sounding music and Naomi simply loves to dance and sing along to the catchy tunes! Check this one below.
Gil, Naomi's favourite cartoon character of all time.
That's who Naomi has been pretending to be these few days. She tries to choose blue or green coloured clothing and gets excited when she notices items that are in these 2 shades. It was amusing for sure when she first started to try to dress up to match Gil's colours, but I do admit, it can become a pain when she insists that she must wear the same blue dress that she wore the day before, or insisting on wearing some blue or green pajamas simply because "it's Gil's colour". Well, of course I don't give in, which results in some tears and pouts, but I usually tell her that she can don something like blue or green hairclips, to be Gil too. Thankfully, she usually perks up with the mention of the colour 'blue' and 'green'. Does not take much persuasion. Hah! I wonder how long this fascination with Gil will last.
Some preps for her birthday:
For her birthday celebration in school, I have decided to prepare the following:
- A birthday cake
- 15 cupcakes
- Themed Favours/ Gift Bags for her classmates
- Bubble Guppy Costume
- Matching cutlery for her classmates/teachers
Birthday Cake & Cupcakes!
For the birthday cake and cupcakes, I decided to try a different vendor this year as I really loved what I see on the Facebook page. If you visit Bits of Whimsy - Cake Couture, you will absolutely understand. Look at all that detail and the lovely craftmanship! Plus, great comments from customers. I have also posted some of Jaime's wonderful creations that I adore to share with everyone:
So excited after looking at her work! Can't wait to see how the Bubble Guppies cake turns out!
For the cutlery needed to serve the cake, we will probably get either baby blue ( to achieve underwater effect) or rainbow (colourful guppies) plates, forks, spoons and napkins. The latter is probably much harder to find in one pack, though!

Favours
Favours wise, I have already bought some cool bubble gifts for her classmates which I will probably decorate with some free Bubble Guppy printables found here.
These cool Bubble favours came in all the nice bright colours that reminds me of the Guppies (as shown in image above), and they were on sale in Toys'r'us in September at 3 for $10! These are not tiny bubble containers; they are approximately 10.5 inches in length with 35ml worth of bubbly goodness in them! This mummy is happy. *nod nod*
I am also thinking of adding more sea themed favours to the mix, or maybe more Bubble Guppy related things like goldfish crackers... so I have another week or so to source and prepare!

Costume...
I have mentioned before that Naomi simply loves dressing up. Thus, having a costume for a themed party is almost a must! I have been looking around in good ol' Pinterest for inspirations and decided to make our own mermaid tail. Here's a look at some great ideas:
And here's my work in progress:
Yes, that's Naomi showing off her Gil tail.
Of course, there's lots to be done to make it pretty. Will post up pics of finished product, if it looks good enough to be posted! :D
So folks, thanks for bearing with me and reading to the end! Sharing my preparations with you made some stress go away, and I hope reading the post did the same for you!
